Dear Seniors and Parents/Guardians,

The title of this course, British Literature, in a sense says it all. At the same time it does not tell you enough; British literature is a rich body of a variety of literary genres. Our only folk epic is Beowulf. We start there and move on to other Anglo-Saxon works and a twentieth century play based on an Anglo-Saxon myth/tradition. We will read a variety of truth and fiction, write formal and informal essays and journals, review grammar, increase our vocabulary, improve and strengthen basic skills, and continue to prepare for life beyond Mercy High School. It is my hope that you will enjoy the selections that we will be reading, that you will be better readers and writers in May than in September, possess a new curiosity about what "classic" writers have to say about life no matter the time in history a work may be placed. I hope some of the heroes and villains we meet will walk into the future with you!

I am looking forward to this year with you; I am looking forward to learning with you because one of the gifts of great literature is its ever-newness as we bring new insights and questions to the classroom.

Sister Anne
